Columbus Socialite of the Week: KARINA NOVA

TGIF and a chilly one it is here today!

Hope all of you heading down to Highball Halloween tonight have warm costumes!

As for Halloween weekend approaching, and ghouls and gals are out celebrating, I will be posting some creative recipes that you can serve at your Halloween party this weekend, so stay tuned!

Now on to my Columbus Socialite of the Week.

She’s talented, beautiful, smart, fun, and savvy and has a great heart. I’ve gotten to know her through the years after meeting her through a friend of mine who married her brother! And via another Socialite of the Week, Miss Bethany Braden!

She’s modeled in Kinder Key’s “Denim & Diamonds” and has been involved in many charities. And lucky for all of you, you can watch her every weekday morning on 10TV news!

Since graduating from Kent State University, she has lived in Columbus and “just can’t seem to part ways with the city,” she says. As an avid traveler, she loves to brag about Columbus and all the great things we have here.

So who is this Columbus-devotee, fashionista, jet-setter and local celeb?

GETTING TO KNOW...KARINA NOVA,
Traffic and general assignment reporter for 10TV News

Miss C.S. - By far Favorite thing to do in Columbus:

KN: I love our parks! Everything from Goodale, to Antrim Park, to Sharon Woods in Westerville. On a great weather day, it's fun to ride a bike, walk or rollerblade at any of these (yes, I still have my rollerblades from the 90's). And not too far from Columbus, Hocking Hills is always a beautiful place to visit.

Miss C.S. - Favorite Restaurant in the City:

KN: I love any place with a great patio, so sitting by the windows at Marcella's or on the patio at Sushi Rock is always fun. But if I could afford it, I'd eat at M every week! (Me too, Karina!)

Miss C.S. - Favorite Hidden Gem:

KN: I know this isn't in Columbus, but a short drive away is a great brewery called Rockmill Brewery. The brewery is on a beautiful farm in Lancaster, OH. If you can, try to set up a tour, I promise you'll be impressed! You can also find this beer at some local restaurants. It's definitely worth a try.

While we're talking about drinks, have you ever tried Tessora Limone? If you haven't, you're missing out! It's a creamy lemoncello liquor made right here in New Albany. They have it at some local restaurants and you can buy at Hills Market.

Miss C.S. - Favorite Shop/Store:

KN: It used to be Collier West, but sadly they closed. I love what Homage is doing with their shirts.

Miss C.S. - Best Party or Scene in the City:

KN: The Short North area.

Miss C.S.. – Favorite local celebrity:

KN: Everyone at 10TV :) And Thad Matta...I hope the guys go all the way this year!

Miss C.S. – Charity of Choice:

KN: I'm on the board of the Fairy Goodmothers. So, I'll have to choose us!:)

Miss C.S. - Best Quality of a Person:

KN: Being Genuine

Miss C.S. – When did you decide you wanted to go into TV/Journalism:

KN: I learned English as a second language when I was 8 years old. And I fell in love with the English language while learning it. I love writing and reading. Plus, I have a curious personality and love being the first to know everything. That's pretty much what I do now; I learn news first and pass it on to our viewers. Plus, it's always rewarding to cover stories that make an impact on our community or in someone's life.

Miss C.S. - If you weren't a news reporter, what would you want to do:

KN:
1. Teacher, I love working with kids. Plus, I think having a good education can go a long way.
2. FBI Agent, I participated in the FBI Citizens Academy last year, it was awesome! Those guys do great work and they're pretty bad ass!
3. Traveling Food Blogger, because I love traveling and food!

Miss C.S. – You're very involved in the community. Tell us more about the organizations you volunteer for:

KN: I'm a mentor to an adorable 3rd grader named Josephine. I do that through Project Mentor. I'm also on the Board of the Fairy Goodmothers. And I've been fortunate to have hosted several events that benefit the United Way of Central Ohio, Nationwide Children's Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House. Plus, I always support anything for Breast Cancer Research.

Miss C.S. – You're on the Board of Fairy Goodmothers which provides prom dresses to teens that can't afford them in our community. What made you want to get involved with that organization and how long have you been involved?

KN: Last year I was asked to help at the Cinderella's Closet event. That's when high school girls come in and we help them find prom dresses, kind of like their personal shoppers. But, these girls receive the dresses, shoes and jewelry for free! Seeing the look on their face when they find the perfect dress is just amazing. These are girls that otherwise, wouldn't be able to afford going to prom. Many of us have that memory of our senior prom, and this organization makes it possible for these young ladies to have a magical night without worrying about the cost. Please "like" us on facebook to find out more... https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Fairy-Goodmothers/

Miss C.S. – Any big events for them that are coming up:

KN: Yes! We have our Party for Prom Fundraiser coming up. It's a blast! It will be at Park Street Saloon in the Arena District on Sunday, January 29, 2012. It's a party you don't want to miss! We are excited to share our partnership with Columbus Monthly's Ten Best New Restaurants Issue. At the event, you'll be able to taste delicious treats from restaurants featured in the magazine. We'll also have great silent auction items, a raffle and entertainment. Don't forget, money raised at the event helps high school girls in our community have the prom of their dreams! The cost is $35, which includes 2 drink tickets.

Miss C.S. - You're also very stylish. What are you favorite trends right now and do you have a favorite brand:

KN: Thanks for the compliment, Ashley! I'm one of those people that shops everywhere and wears everything! I love shopping while traveling, that way I find unique clothes that you couldn't find here. My favorite trend right now is pretty simple, straight leg jeans with a cute pair of booties, a sparkly top to match with a little jacket.

Miss C.S. - Finish the sentence, “If I could do anything in the World, I would...”

KN: Travel the world.

Miss C.S. – Why Columbus? (live, work, play – you name it)

KN: It has everything! Fun, fashion, great entertainment, wonderful people and great opportunities!

Miss C.S. - In ONE word, a Columbus Socialite is:

KN: Confident

Thank you Karina for your interview and looking forward to seeing you at Columbus Socialite's One-Year Anniversary Party on Thursday, November 10 from 7-9 p.m. at Camelot Cellars. To rsvp to the event, please click here.

Eventing off,

Cody Jewell Memorial Fund, a Hilliard student that lost his life too early

Hello All,

I wanted to share with you a local story that was passed along to me from a friend. It's a moving story that shows just the characters that are living in our community. This is a touching story of a teacher and a student and what this teacher is doing in his honor.

A 5th grade teacher at Hoffman Trails Elementary school in Hilliard, Ohio shares her story below on how students at Hilliard City Schools will benefit from the legacy of one little boy who lost his life way too young.

I hope that after you read this, you will consider helping too.

Written by Mrs. Julie Caserta, a 5th Grade Teacher:

"Once in a while, I believe, humans have this natural instinctive desire to re-visit the past. Sometimes, whether we consciously choose to or not. Certain things trigger our memories of the past: music playing on the radio, a smell in the air, or a picture burnt into our reflective and imaginative minds. Sometimes we recall events of the past by where we were or who we were with when something momentous, dramatic, or tragic occurs. Some of these trips down memory lane can bring smiles and laughs while others can bring sadness and tears. One such sad event in my life frequently re-occurs in my memory. I’d like your help to turn my memory into a legacy of hope for the future with a positive emphasis on education.

On September 14, 2010, a Hilliard City School student, Cody Jewell, was waiting for his bus to arrive. After having just dropped off my two children at my mother’s house for the day, I was on my way to school. I was running a few minutes late and decided to skip the usual stop for coffee. I took an alternate route to get to work. As many of us do, I began to go through my "to-do" list for the day. Driving cautiously, seeing my “to-do’s” in the forefront of my head, I found myself looking behind me, looking in my rear-view mirror – almost as if just another thing to “check off that list.” However, I saw something that has forever changed my life. The little boy, Cody Jewell, who was waiting for his bus, had been hit by the car behind me. I immediately pulled over and stopped my car. As a mother and a teacher, I ran to Cody. I was the first responder to get to Cody and held him in my arms until the paramedics arrived. Sadly, Cody did not survive the accident.

Shortly after the accident I yearned to learn about this young boy with whom I had shared such an intimate moment. I found myself asking all sorts of questions...What did he like? Dislike? What were his beliefs? What did his laugh sound like? --all things that make a little boy, exactly that, a boy-- I had no idea who he was. As I listened to stories told by his family members and by friends in days following the accident, I slowly learned the answers to these questions. I found out what type of kid he really was. He was a great little boy!

Cody was full of energy, a great big brother, a loving son. He was kind to others, he was a good friend, and a young boy who had an amazing understanding of his faith. All of these traits made Cody special to many people. But to me, he was one of the smartest little boys I might ever have a chance to speak about. As it turns out, Cody had encouraged his own mother to return to school and often acted as her inspiration and her personal cheerleader! Young Cody understood the meaning of school. This precocious understanding in the value of education is powerful, more than words can express. It has inspired me to honor Cody's passion and wisdom in a beneficial legacy.

I have created The Cody Jewell Memorial Scholarship Fund, which will be available to graduating Hilliard High School students and managed by the Hilliard Education Foundation. To get the fund started, I am asking for your help! I have set a personal goal to raise $3,000 by running in my first ever half marathon, October 16th, in honor and support of Cody.

You can sponsor me and my efforts by going to this following website, www.hilliardeducationfoundation.org, and making an online donation or by sending a check payable to: Hilliard Education Foundation with Cody Jewell Fund in the memo line.

Hilliard Education Foundation
P.O. Box 1268
Hilliard, OH 43026

The greatest satisfaction about giving to a cause like this is the fulfillment of knowing you’ve helped someone else. The other benefit is knowing you contributed, even in a small way, to a collective goal. My goal is not only to provide a scholarship to deserving Seniors to further their education as Cody wished for himself and his mother, but to give Cody's family and myself the ability to smile when we instinctively go back to this memory. Please help us create a happy ending to this tragic story. Your support in this endeavor will financially and emotionally change people's lives in a special way!"

Although the marathon has already passed and I hope Julie reached her goal, I hope you all will consider still donating to a great cause. This could have been your brother, your son, your nephew, a grandchild....

It breaks my heart that Cody lost his life so early any my thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

In honor of Cody, Columbus Socialite will donate $1 for every person that donates to the fund and comments below.

Miss C.S.

Columbus Socialite of the Week: MIRANDA ROBERTS

Happy Friday.

Oh, the love for a Friday. The feeling you get when Friday finally rolls around, no matter the workload that day, you know you have two upcoming days of R&R to rest and then return to the daily grind of the next work week.

With weekends come galas, events and a lot of nonprofits holding charity functions.

Tonight I’m looking forward to the finale fashion show of FashionWeekColumbus which benefits Dress for Success Columbus and Central Ohio Men Against Prostate Cancer.

There are so many amazing nonprofit organizations in this town which is what I love about Columbus so much.

You’ve read about my main organization that I support Kinder Key of Nationwide Children’s Hospital which benefits the Heart Center, but Nationwide Children’s Hospital also has other women auxiliary groups that support different areas of the Hospital.

One being Pleasure Guild. A 103-year-old organization of more than 50 committed women raising funds for the hospice program and palliative care program at Nationwide Children's Hospital.

Each year, they’ve raised over $200,000. That’s amazing! These ladies should feel proud of their time and commitment to giving back to others.

They host several fundraisers including Once Upon A Night(a black tie gala), SPAGIO: A Celebration of Wine, Food and Dining with the Stars and helping out at the Memorial Tournament.

Not only is their leading fundraiser held annually in March at the Palace, (a professionally directed family play production) they’re also lead by a very committed and talented lady who has been with the organization for three years.

She is a 31-year-old Columbus native, who currently resides in Dublin and works with BNY Mellon Wealth management.

So who is Pleasure Guild’s leading lady and President of the organization?
